  • Original language description

The monograph provides new data on systematics and host associations of feather mites of the subfamily Proctophyllodinae recorded on passerines in Costa Rica. A total of 25 species of six genera have been recorded, of which 19 new species are described: Anisophyllodes cuneiformis from Sittasomus griseicapillus, Atrichophyllodes latilobus from Hylophylax naevioides, Nycteridocaulus attila from Attila spadiceus, N. hylo¬phylax from Hylophylax naevioides, N. ketourus from Thryophilus rufalbus, N. leptopogoni from Leptopogon superciliaris, N. myiobius from Myiobius sulphureipygius, N. myioborus from Myioborus miniatus, N. platyrinchi from Platyrinchus cancrominus, Platyacarus cau¬lifer from Glyphorynchus spirurus, Pl. dendrocinclae from Dendrocincla homochroa, Pl. dendrocolapti and Pl. picumnus from Dendrocolaptes picumnus, Pl. sclerurus from Sclerurus mexicanus, Proctophyllodes arremoni from Arremon brunneinucha, Pr. euphoniae from Euphonia hirundinacea, Pr. vesicularis from E. anneae, Pr. parkesiae from Parkesia motacilla, and Pr. strictophyllus from Coereba flaveola. The female of Anisophyllodes pipromorphae is described for the first time. nFive new host associations are recorded for Anisophyllodes pipromorphae, Diproctophyllodes dielytra, Nycteridocaulus pectinatus, and Proctophyllodes thraupis. nTwo species, Proctophyllodes habiae and Platyacarus sittasomi, are recorded in Costa Rica for the first time. nNew diagnoses and keys to all currently known species are provided for the genera Anisophyllodes, Atrichophyllodes, Nycteridocaulus, and Platyacarus. Two new species groups, caulifer and minor, are established within the genus Platyacarus. The history of taxonomic investigations of proc¬tophyllodine feather mites is briefly presented. We summarize host associations with passerine birds of the New World for these proctophyllodine genera and species, excluding the genus Proctophyllodes. n
