Ancient Landscapes of Moravia: Inventory of the sites that have avoided land use changes over the long-term in the Czech Republic

  • Original language description

Radical chapapnges in land use occurred in connection with the onset of the main wave of the industrial revolution as a result of a number of economic, social and political changes, especially after 1850. All areas that currently retain the appearance and structure of land use which originated before 1850 represent valuable entities worthy of several forms of landscape protection. The methods of their detection in the current landscape, their geographical distribution within the historical borders of Moravia and the discussion on the reasons for their preservation to this day are the subjects of this chapter. Total of 1139 ancient pre-industrial landscape segments were identified using a standardized survey methodology. Their intra-regional distribution is very irregular. Large areas of some inventory regions are completely free of segments of the ancient pre-industrial landscape. On the contrary, significant accumulations of segments of the ancient landscape can also be observed in limited parts of the regions. This is most likely due to the diversity of natural conditions in each ethnographic and geographical region. These regions have an individual character and are not naturally homogeneous. Their unifying criterion is affiliation to an ethnographic unit on the one hand, or to an orographic unit, a city's gravitational area or river basin on the other hand.
