Smectites composite materials for environmental remediation

  • Original language description

Clay minerals from the smectite group are widely used as precursors for composite materials. Clay-based composites represent a current trend in the development of novel materials that can offer a suitable alternative of eco-friendly and affordable materials for pollutant removal in environmental remediation. The study focuses on design and preparation of composites based on selected smectites with manganese oxides and verification of their performance in various applications. The preparation of composites was performed by precipitation of manganese oxides colloids on the surface of chemically modified clay mineral montmorillonit. The prepared materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRFS). The composites were studied for thermal stability, catalytic activity, sorption properties and evaluation of specific surface area. Results showed creation of a manganese oxide phase with a structure of α-MnO2 (XRD, FT-IR), the α-MnO2 fibers cover the surface of the clay grains and are much shorter than in the neat reference sample (SEM). The obtained composites exhibited increased efficiency in catalytic combustion of volatile organic compounds (toluene and ethanol). The adsorption procedure in a batch regimen confirmed sufficient sorption ability (over 90%) for two types of broad-spectrum antibiotics.
