    The aim of the study was the detailed characterization of smectite minerals (before and after their chemical activation) for the preparation of polymer-clay nanocomposites in comparison with the natural untreated material. On the basis of obtained results it can be concluded that activated materials exhibit changes of structural and surface properties. The modification mainly affected meso-macroporous montmorillonite samples. In these cases, the prepared samples are potentially suited to be precursors of multifunctional sorbents with enhanced sorption properties.
