The Risks of Mine Closures and the Challenges Arising from Utilisation of the Closed Mining Environment
Original language description
The natural reason for closing a mine and its subsequent decommissioning is the complete exhaustion of the mineral reserves. In practice, however, reserves are never fully extracted - a small percentage remains unextractable due to safety, mining, and technical reasons. Other reasons for mine closure effectively shorten its life cycle, with the mine being closed before all reserves are extracted. Whether the mine is maintained for potential reopening or decommissioned immediately depends on the specific situation. Closure can be triggered by unfavorable mining and geological conditions, making mining operations unmanageable and unsafe due to issues like mountain pressures, tremors, or gas and water eruptions. In the case of gaseous coal mines, even after mining ceases, methane continues to be released from the Carboniferous massif. The final step of decommissioning - destroying and backfilling mine workings - is crucial to prevent potential problems that could threaten the surface and nearby infrastructure.n
