Removal of Cd(II)ions by adsorption on inorganically modified montmorillonite composite
Original language description
Heavy metals are important aquatic pollutants, mainly as a result of anthropogenic activities, with high toxicity and non-biodegradability, affecting ecosystems and human health. This study investigates manganese oxide-coated montmorillonite (Mn-Mt) as an adsorbent for the removal of Cd(II) ions from solutions. X-ray diffraction analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed the successful incorporation of manganese oxide, predominantly in the form of cryptomelane (αMnO2). The sorption of Cd(II) ions was pH dependent and adsorption isotherms indicated that the uptake could be described by the Langmuir model. Sorption experiments demonstrated that the synthesis of inorganically modified montmorillonite composites offers the possibility of obtaining materials that can potentially be used as sorbents for the removal of Cd(II) ions from aqueous solutions.
