India?s success in sustaining its democracy while authoritative regimes sprouted in almost all other postcolonial countries regularly puzzles political scientists. For some of them, India has come to epitomize a kind of bright example to be followed by other developing and underdeveloped countries; other academics, given the many ominous features and trends in India?s politics, have been doubtful about the sustainability of India?s democratic development without some kind of major improvement.This review is based predominantly on the comparison of two pivotal publications for the political theory of India: Subrata Mitra?s The Puzzle of India?s Governance and Atul Kohli?s Democracy and Discontent. Its aim is on the base of these two publications to describe the methodological development of current political theory of India, patterns of conceptualizing India?s politics, and the implication and contribution of these patterns to political theory in general.

Czech description

Politologové si pravidelně lámají hlavu nad úspěšným udržením se demokracie v Indii, v kontextu kdy ve všech ostatních postkoloniálních zemích došlo postupně k nastolení autoritářských režimů . Pro některé z nich Indie představuje zářný a následováníhodný příklad pro ostatní rozvojové země, jiní odbornící jsou vzhledem k množství zhoubných jevů a trendů v indické demokracii skeptičtí ohledně její udržitelnosti, pokud v systému nedojde k zásadním změnám k lepšímu. Tato review je založená především na srovnání dvou stěžejních publikací pro politickou teorii Indie: The Puzzle of India´s Governance od Subraty Mitry a Democracy and Discontent Atula Kohliho. Cílem je na jejich základě popsat vývoj v metodologii současné politické teorie Indie, způsobů konceptualizace indické politiky, jejich důsledky a přínos pro politickou teorii obecně.
