Although the last two decades have seen a considerable expansion of scholarship concerned with Sufi orders in the contemporary world, few studies have focused on the processes that shape the Sufis? spiritual training. This article analyses some aspects of the Sufi training in a branch of the Q?diriyya based in Hyderabad, using both ethnographic and textual sources. At present, the daily engagements and busy schedules of masters and disciples make it difficult to carry on training based on community lifeand close supervision of the master, as it used to happen in the khanqah. Rather, training is based mainly on occasional private and individual meetings between the masters and their disciples and public periodic gatherings. In spite of the distance between masters and disciples, the disciples are able to internalize the relationship with their masters and establish a solid connection with them, thanks to specific exercises and psychological paradigms.
