16—18 世纪，耶稣会士在中国的努力促成了欧洲与儒家思想的初次相遇罗明坚首次尝试将《大学》序言译为拉丁文，后于1593 年在意大利罗马发表随后，在郭纳爵和殷铎泽的主持下，若干儒家经典被译成拉丁语，并于1662 年在中国刊行不过，最早以书籍形式问世的儒家经典译本是《中国哲学家孔子》，它于1687 年在巴黎出版，随即引起了广泛的关注《中国哲学家孔子》收入对“四书中三部的移译和注释儒家经典的新译本于1711 年在布拉格出版，名为《中华帝国六经》，作者是比利时（弗拉芒）诗人剧作家曾在中国传教的耶稣会士卫方济（François Noël，拉丁名Franciscus Noël，1651—1729）
