Transnational Ties and Local Society´s Role in Improving the PRC‘s Image in Central Asia (2018)
Original language description
The subject of book chapter is an analysis of attempts on the part the PRC to spread its influence in societies of Central Asia by the means of its ambitious „Belt and Road“ project. PRC has paid a great deal of attention to improving its image in the eyes of the local public opinion and to dispelling the existing latent sinophobia and fears of Chinese expansionism. Theoretical framework of the chapter has been inspired by the study of transnational actors in international relations and the emerging field of transnational studies. Rather than referring automatically to nation state, its author specifically uses the concept of „transnational societal spaces“. The chapter is based on field research in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan and discursive analysis performed in the years 2015–2017.
