Original language description
This chapter remembers Kamil Sedláček (1926–2011), perhaps best known among linguists. Despite being a private scholar in communist Czechoslovakia, even forced to work as a lathe operator during the 1950s, he made a significant contribution to Tibetan studies and linguistics. He published in English, German, French and Russian (interestingly not in Czech) and had extraordinary contacts—for example, with Yuri Roerich or the young Per Sørensen. This man living in the small Moravian town of Prostějov was able to produce a textbook of modern Tibetan (the manuscript is still in the SOAS archive) and an impressive Tibetan Newspaper Reader. Kamil Sedláček was not very well known even to Czech scholars and this text provides unique insight into his life based on personal contact and the accounts and recollections of his family.
