Translation of Taiwanese literature in dialogue with the publishing industry

  • Original language description

The event was part of the literary festival “Month of Author's Reading” (MAČ), which invited thirty-one authors from one country to present their work in four different cities—Brno, Ostrava, Prešov, and Bratislava—across two countries, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. This year, the special guest was Taiwan. Each day, a new author was introduced and paired with a Czech author, and together they presented their literature while touring the cities. The festival provided a platform for the presentation of national literatures abroad, closely linked to the translation process, involving various stakeholders such as translators, agents, publishers, ministries of culture, and cultural centers. The MAČ Festival facilitated a forum for publishers and agents, as well as translators and memory institutions, to discuss the presentation of foreign literatures. Several opportunities for idea exchange between the two groups were organized. The group of publishers and agents included small and medium-sized publishers from the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Ukraine, and Taiwan. The workshop “Translating Taiwanese Literature in Dialogue with the Publishing Industry” brought together a small group of Western language translators, often experts in Chinese and Taiwanese studies, to engage in several topics. The workshop was divided into three main themes: first, a historically informed discussion on the development of translations in different regions, second, a discussion on translation strategies, combining theoretical and practical knowledge, and third, an opportunity to learn about Taiwan's grant programs and newly published literary works, with representatives from Taiwan's cultural authorities in attendance. In parallel, the publishers discussed similar topics, and at the end of the second day, the main findings from each group were presented at the Mixer.
