Nomadic Spirituality in Xiao Hong’s Field of Life and Death

  • Original language description

Nomadic Spirituality in Xiao Hong’s Field of Life and Death examines the ways in which Xiao Hong portrays spirituality through movement, marginality, and existential struggle in her seminal 1935 novel Field of Life and Death. The lecture explores how displacement, social vulnerability, and the harsh realities of rural life in Northeast China shape the characters’ inner lives and ethical reflections, producing a form of “nomadic spirituality” that is fluid, situational, and grounded in lived experience rather than institutionalized religion.
