Základní údaje: Crossborder Identities: Herati Jews between Afghanistan, Central Asia, and Iran.n[THE FOURTH CESAI CONFERENCE OF AFGHAN STUDIES. Bonn (BICC) - Online, 01.07.2025-02.07.2025In the Mid-19th century, the influx of Jews from Iran turned the Jewish community in Herat into one of the biggest Jewish communities in the Central Asian Triangle. When the borders of Afghanistan were drawn by the imperial powers, Herati Jews were active in trade on both sides and across these new demarcating lines. Many decided to settle down on the Russian side of the new border while they continued and even extended their trading activities. Only the restrictive economic policies in the Soviet Union and in Afghanistan in the 1930s, dismantled the Jewish cross border trade and family networks in the Jewish Triangle. The closure of the borders in Central Asia, the creation of nation states, and the reshaping of mobility patterns also inevitably led to the demise of the Herati and finally Afghan Jewish community.
