    Resistance. The axis and beyond

  • Original language description

Resistance: The Axis and Beyond (Middle East Report 313, Winter 2024), published by the Middle East Research and Information Project (MERIP), examines the evolving concept and practice of “resistance” in the contemporary Middle East. The issue centers on the so-called Axis of Resistance—a network of state and non-state actors aligned primarily with Iran, including groups in Lebanon, Palestine, Iraq and Yemen—while also moving beyond a narrow geopolitical lens to explore the broader ideological, social and historical dimensions of resistance.nnThrough analytical essays and case studies, the contributors investigate how resistance is framed politically and symbolically, how narratives of oppression and anti-imperialism shape regional alliances, and how recent regional upheavals have tested or transformed these alignments. The volume situates armed struggle, political mobilization and discursive strategies within longer histories of colonialism, intervention and regional power competition. Overall, the issue offers a critical, interdisciplinary perspective on how resistance operates both as a strategic network and as a powerful organizing idea in Middle Eastern politics.
