    Territorialisation of the China-Nepal border

  • Original language description

Territorialisation of the China-Nepal border: The PRC has increasing confidence in its economic means and geopolitical influence and this confidence is more intensely apparent also along its previously remote borderlands in the Himalayas. When dealing with border disputes, the PRC is gradually stepping away from diplomatic negotiation and moving towards bold, unilateral action, implementing colonising practices in the neutral border zone or even in spaces beyond PRC territory. This talk focuses on the PRC–Nepal border, not solely as a line demarcating spheres of political influence but also as a space to demonstrate dominance and power – a testing ground for China’s implementation of territorial politics. In particular, it deals with the period since 2020, during which the Covid-19 pandemic facilitated the abrupt closure of state borders without further justification. China used this period of paralysation of border traffic to restructuralise its political practices along the frontier and the borderline itself.
