In the shadow of others. Belarusian-Latvian relations from the past to nowadays
Original language description
Belarus and Latvia are neighbors linked by the Dzvina/Daugava river. As neighbors, inhabitants of today’s Belarus and Latvia have significant historical experience of coexistence and collaboration that dates back at least to the early Middle Ages. Latvians could hardly be described as ‘a significant other’ for Belarusians. The same seems to be true for the Latvians’ view on the Belarusians. In the historical context, more attention is paid to the relations of Latvians with Germans, Poles or Russians. The analysis of the cultural, linguistic, and historical relations between Belarusians and Latvians form an important part of mutual understanding and development of the relations between the two states and societies. The collective monograph consists of four thematic blocks: 1. Archeology and History, 2. Ethnology, Folklore, Oral History, 3. Social Activity, History of Education, Philosophy and 4. Science, Culture and Art, Literature, Tourism. The reader will find here information chronologically arranged from the Middle Ages to the present day, on various scientific disciplines, Belarusian-Latvian ties and spheres of cooperation between Belarusians and Latvians. It begins with an introductory article on the history of research on Belarusian-Latvian ties in the 20th and 21st centuries. 25 articles were written by 26 researchers from Belarus, Latvia, Poland and the Czech Republic.
