Representations of Light in John Chortasmenos’ Rhetoric. A Comparison of Verse and Prose Compositions
Original language description
This chapter discusses the representations of light in the verse and prose rhetorical compositions of John Chortasmenos (c.1370–1439). Based on indications taken from modern metaphor theory, it is argued that the author used several scenarios of deploying light which came to denote immortality, stability, or beauty of both individuals and buildings. The texts discussed here suggest that Chortasmenos introduced a set of far more intense and varied types of light imagery into his poetry than into his prose writing, be they speeches, essays, or letters. At the same time, the presence of light echoes a broader usage of image schemas that seem to inform Chortasmenos’ works.
