Original language description
Utilizing the issues of Collective Identity and Symbolic Uses of Politics this paper explores possibilities of establishing and consolidating European identity. It is shown that former European politics displayed little symbolic significance and, therefore, made scant contributions towards building a strong European identity. The European Currency Union and the initiation of Euro are used as examples to show how the dilemma can be overcome.

Vycházeje z pojmů kolektivní identity a symbolické politiky analyzuje tato stať možnosti vytvořit, resp. stabilizovat evropskou identitu. Ukazuje, že dosavadní politika evropských zemí projevila velmi málo pochopení pro symbolický rozměr evropské integrace a proto velmi málo přispěla k vytvoření silné evropské identity. Jako pozitivní a následováníhodné příklady jsou ve stati uvedeny evropská měnová unie a zavedení jednotné měny.
