Choosing a leader: An examination of party members´ preferences in a leadership election
Original language description
Until the 1990s most party leadership elections in Europe were restricted to legislators. In October 2002, the Irish Labour Party chose its new leader using a postal ballot of all members. Using a unique post-election survey this chapter examines for thefirst time what factors underpin vote choice in party leadership elections among ordinary members. This case study research reveals that party leadership elections are strongly driven by personalized campaigning, policy preferences and election specificconsiderations.
