Labor Market Institutions and Their Impact on Shadow Economies in Europe
Original language description
We analyze the role of labor market institutions in explaining the development of the shadow economies in Europe. We use several alternative measures of the shadow sector to examine the effects of institutions in the old and the new EU member states. Ourresults indicate that the institution that unambiguously increases the shadow economy is the strictness of employment protection legislation. Other institutions have less robust effects, and their impact differs between the two regions.
