What Made Jews a Demographic Avant-Garde in Modern Europe?
Original language description
The chapter examines what made Jews in Bohemia true forerunners of the demographic transition in Europe and why this occurred when it did. The article presents the key findings on historical-demographic analysis of Jews in Bohemia spanning over two hundred years, from the mid-18th to the mid-20th century. It interprets the timing of mortality and fertility decline within historical and social context and highlights the role of Jewish tradition, habits and cultural development in that process. The conclusions of the article return to the larger debates about the causes of the demographic transition.
