Original language description
The article is focused on population development in regions of Central Europe in last twenty years. It describes changing population distribution as well as changing population structures. A special attention is devoted to population decrease / shrinkingand population ageing. Both these processes require adequate policy responses to meet the challenges they bring for local governance, public budgets and service and infrastructure provision. In the final part the article discuss future prospects of population development in regions in next decades. Low fertility levels and fast population ageing will led to mainstreaming of population decrease in a majority Central European regions. The conclusions gained from data analysis are supplemented by a shortsummary of thematically related projects, which highlights the importance of demographic change adaptation as key condition for sustainable development of regions in Central Europe.
