Constructions of parenthood in the Czech Republic: Maternal Care and Paternal Help
Original language description
The chapter is based on the analysis of 32 interviews with Czech parents-to-be. The sample was formed by 16 dual earner couples, with mostly higher education and income when compared with average Czechs, even in this age group. We attempt to illustrate the ways in which parents-to-be interpret and enact motherhood and fatherhood. We focus on their plans for reconciling parenthood with their lives so far, and especially within the work sphere. First, we discuss their plans for utilizing maternity and parental leave. Second, we describe mothers’ and fathers’ plans to reconcile family and work life. As a related topic, we consider norms regarding the age at which children can be given to the care of another person or institution. Finally, we present a general conceptualization of mothers’ and fathers’ main parental roles as planned by the parents-to-be. In the Czech Republic, motherhood and fatherhood were constructed in a particularly traditional and essentialist way.
