Original language description
The workshop From ‘Democratic Backsliding’ to ‘Re-Democratizing’: Understanding How East European Countries Get Back on a Liberal Democratic Course was held on 3rd–4th June 2025 at the Jinonice Campus of Charles University in Prague. The event was convened by Adam Fagan (King’s College London) and Petra Guasti (Charles University, Systemic Risk Institute), and brought together scholars from across Europe and the United States. The workshop opened with a keynote lecture by Lenka Bustiková (University of Florida) on Uncivil Society and Polarization: Illiberal Swerves and De-Democratization, followed by two thematic panels exploring pathways back to democracy and the role of civil society in this process. Day one concluded with a keynote lecture by Milada Vachudová (UNC Chapel Hill). The second day focused on political actors and parties, featuring presentations on opposition dynamics, party–civil society interactions, and digital communication strategies in the region. The workshop concluded with a reflective discussion on the comparative lessons from Central and Eastern Europe’s experiences with democratic decline and renewal.
