Child material deprivation in the EU: The role of family structure

  • Original language description

Utilising the EU-SILC modules 2009, 2014, and 2021, this note analyses child-specific material deprivation in the EU Member States. Besides the statistics on the most frequently lacked items, the child-specific material deprivation intensity (i.e., the number of lacked items) and the child-specific material deprivation rate over three periods, regression models are used to examine factors of child-specific material deprivation in 2021. Special attention is devoted to blended families, defined here as households of a couple where at least one adult is a stepparent to at least one child, because the situation of children from blended families has been scarce both in statistics and research. The existence of a child material deprivation gap between blended and traditional nuclear families is tested in this note.
