Hans Rottenhammer's Four Elements in Bückeburg
Original language description
Paintings of the Four Elements by a mannerist painter Hans Rottenhammer (1564?1625) decorate a ceiling of the Golden Chamber in Bückeburg Castle in Germany. They are a unique testament of artist's ability to deal with large dimensional paintings. Alhought a theme was popular in decorations of residences in central and western Europe (forexample in Prague Castle), the painter used italian examples and painted the Elements as antique gods. His allegory of the Element Wind represented by the "Boreas abducting Orythia" is unique in oil painting that time, but could be found in prints of Ovid's Methamorphosis. In the middle of ceiling there used to be a painting with "Gathering of Gods".
