Original language description

Despite El Greco?s origin in Crete and his biography, the artist did not (apart from a few exceptions) take his subjects from the mythology of antiquity and did not draw his inspiration from the antique art. This article however shows that a female figure right in the background of his Purification of the Temple of ca. 1570 (and in its later versions) was inspired by the Hora (season) of Winter as seen on ?Campana? reliefs and related works.
