Lost and Found: A Photographic Collection Managed by an Art-History Research Institute
Original language description
The paper refers to the photographic collection which was established in 2008 at the Institute of Art History of the Czech Academy of Sciences in Prague, basically by sorting out and pulling together photographic material from art-historical legacies administered by the Institute´s archive. Based on more than forty estates, the variety of provenance reflects variety of the material and the challenges we had to face then ? starting from the scratch. Until 2008 the photographs, with only a few exceptions, were ?lying at the Institute´s archive without any attention for over 50 years, intact in terms of arrangement, but damaged in the course of time and due to storage conditions. Having in mind that sorting or uncovering an archive is an open-ended process and the more precisely the archive is catalogued, the more it is tied down, one´s attitude to establishing the IAH collection was far from exempt from the disheartening feeling that something would be lost a priori by any intervention i
