Old radicality and new mentality. Czech art at the outbreak of the First World War
Original language description
According to Václav Nebeský the post-war situation of modern art in Czechoslovakia was completely different from before the war and "partly even in time of war". The only way it is possible to select and to characterize modern art is to measure the "personal significance" of the individual artists. Nebeský called this tendency a "Differentiated modernity". The article shows how differently figures on the Czech art scene understood the "new mentality" brought about by the First World War. For Otto Gutfreund it was honesty, for Vincenc Kramář the weakening of the formal experiments in contemporary art practice (Cubism), for Emil Filla the softening of the Cubist idiom and for Otokar Kubín Neo-Classicism. And for Nebeský it meant the dissolving of the universal values of styles before WW1 and the opening of space for numerous particular and personal approaches.
