Confiscated Cultural Assets of the German Minority in Czechoslovakia
Original language description
During practically 70 years of its existence, the Czechoslovak Republic implemented several waves of interventions into the private ownership of its citizens. The most extensive transfer of these buildings and items into public hands took place after World War II. In the first phase, it was the property of the German minority of more than a million people, whose expulsion from Czechoslovakia was decided already at the end of the war. The confiscation of this property naturally also affected items of cultural value – works of art, books, museum collections, archival documents. The article focuses on the conception of their protection and further utilization.
