Original language description
The text juxtaposes Leda and the Swan by Joseph Heintz the Elder, exhibited in Augsburg 2015, with a newly rediscovered painting of the same subject. It also takes into consideration the role of three drawings that have been discussed with the Augsburg painting. The comparison shows the process by which Heintz created variant compositions. The restoration of the new work uncovered traces of underdrawing and multiple pentimenti, providing evidence that this oil on copper could have been the first composition that was intended for the emperor. The existence of the newly identified painting corresponds to the painter’s custom to repeat the successful composition several times if it evoked interest among collectors.
