Henricus Aloysius Brückner, Magister Capellae of the Prague Cathedral and Native of Liebenthal (Lubomierz, Lower Silesia)

  • Original language description

The compositions preserved in Kroměříž and Berlin, and especially the relatively abundant appearance of the composer’s name in Czech musical inventories of the second half of the 17th century, have long raised the question of who Henricus Aloysius Brückner was and where he came from. So far, the only clue has been that he composed a requiem for Cardinal Harrach (1598–1667). we know about this composition only from records in the music inventories from Třebenice and Osek. It is now possible to confirm the hypothesis that he was the Kapellmeister of the Prague Cathedral. Brückner studied at the University of Prague, where he came from Liebenthal in Silesia. Therefore, he can be counted among the significant musicians of Silesian origin. His career and the spread of his oeuvre are further evidence of the networks of close relations linking Silesia, Bohemia and Moravia at that time. The new findings related to Brückner’s origins provide an opportunity to evaluate his compositional output.
