Chymiatry: Hájek’s Position.
Original language description
In Prague, Hájek was in contact with a circle of foreign alchemists, whom he accommodated in his house. Reports survive of transmutations that were to be carried out there. Hájek conveyed news of these events to Emperor Rudolf II. As is clear from his correspondence with Rheticus and Dudith, he was interested in the work of Paracelsus and in other new currents of medicine (e.g., Fernel). However, he approached the new f indings critically and combined them with traditional Galenic medicine. The surviving correspondence with Tycho Brahe is important evidence of these interests and shows that Tycho considered Hájek an expert in chymiatry (medically oriented alchemy). As Hájek got older, he became more sceptical of chymiatry and the possibilities of its implementation.
