Original language description
This article explores the “double lives” of Eduard Hanslick (1825–1904), a prominent music aesthetician, critic, and pedagogue who also composed songs. It connects his early compositional activities – encompassing Czech- and German-language songs – with his later academic and critical work, revealing how his creative output and self-fashioning reflect a complex web of cultural identities, political contexts, and philosophical influences. The study examines Hanslick’s Czech songs in relation to the Czech National Revival, his German songs within Prague’s private musical circles, and his aesthetic positions against the backdrop of the Thun education reform and Herbartian positivism. It argues that Hanslick’s conception of musical aesthetics as a “supranational” science was shaped by liberal ideals and the political pressures of the Habsburg Monarchy. By highlighting intersections between biography, aesthetics, and cultural politics, the article contributes to a more nuanced understanding of music history as cultural practice and identity as a dynamic, multilayered concept.
