    Analysis of K(+) accumulation reveals privileged extracellular region in the vicinity of glial cells in situ

    In the study performed in rat and mouse spinal cord slices, we used a mathematical model to calculate the volume of the extracellular space in the vicinity of glial cells, defined as the volume available for K+ accumulation during membrane depolarization. Our mathematical analysis of K+ accumulation reveals a privileged region of the extracellular space in the vicinity of glial cells in the CNS that is 10-100x smaller around oligodendrocytes than around astrocytes. The presence of such privileged regions around cells may affect the accumulation not only of K+, but also of other neuroactive substances and alter communication between cells in the CNS.

    Ve studii provedené na míšních řezech myši a potkana jsme použili matematický model pro výpočet objemu extracelulárního prostoru v těsném okolí gliových buněk, definovaného jako prostor, ve kterém se hromadí K+ v průběhu depolarizace membrány. Naše matematická analýza hromadění K+ prokázala privilegovanou oblast extracelulárního prostoru v těsné blízkosti gliových buněk v CNS, která je 10-100x menší v okolí oligodendrocytů než astrocytů. Přítomnost tohoto prostoru v okolí buněk může ovlivnit hromadění nejen K+, ale i dalších neuroaktivních látek a může mít vliv i na komunikaci mezi buňkami v CNS.
