Biomarkers of exposure to tobacco smoke and environmental pollutants in mothers and its transplacental transfer to the foetus. Part II: Oxidative damage
Original language description
Oxidative damage to DNA, lipids and proteins was measured in 80 newborns and 79 mothers. There was no difference in oxidation of either marker in newborns born to mothers exposed and unexposed to tobacco smoke. Protein oxidation was comparable in the umbilical cord and in maternal blood plasma. Lipid peroxidation was higher in newborns than in mothers. Protein oxidation and lipid peroxidation in cord blood correlated with those in maternal plasma. DNA oxidation in newborns was correlated was bulky DNA adducts in lymphocyte DNA of newborns and mothers. The results underlined close correlation of oxidative stress markers between newborns and mothers and a relationship between oxidative stress and induction of DNA adducts.
