Co-transplantation of olfactory ensheathing glia and mesenchymal stromal cells does not have synergistic effects after spinal cord injury in the rat
Original language description
Olfactory ensheathing glia (OEG) and mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC) have been investigated as promising candidates for spinal cord repair. In this study, the effect of the transplantation of OEG and/or MSC on behavioral, electrophysiologic and histologic outcomes after SCI was studied. Both OEG and MSC could foster locomotor function by sparing the spinal cord, but their combined advantages provide no added benefit to SCI therapy. We speculate that to maximize the advantageous effects of co-transplantation, direct implantation of OEG into the spinal cord lesion accompanied by intravenous injection of MSC might be more efficacious approach to the co-transplantation of OEG and MSC.
