Vitamin C for DNA damage prevention
Original language description
This review evaluates the human studies that used molecular epidemiology methods to investigate the ability of vitamin C to affect genetic damage. The protective effect of vitamin C was confirmed at plasma levels >50 ?mol/l. The efect of vitamin C supplementation was studied in various study groups (subjects exposed to ionizing radiation, subjects occupationally or environmentally exposed to mutagens, to c-PAHs and PM2.5 in polluted air as well as smokers and poorly nourished subjects). It is possible that the impact of vitamin C on DNA damage depends both on background values of vitamin C in the individual as well as on the level of exposure to xenobiotics or oxidative stress.
