Personal exposure to volatile organic compounds in the Czech Republic

  • Original language description

Personal exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) was analyzed in three industrial cities of the heavily polluted Moravian-Silesian region (Prague served as a control locality). Adult non-smokers (N=160) were monitored in the winter and summer of 2009. Radiello diffusive passive samplers were used to measure the exposure to BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, meta-plus para-xylene and ortho-xylene). The personal exposures to BTEX were higher than the corresponding stationary monitoring levels detected in the individual localities. The indoor environment, environmental tobacco smoke, cooking, a home heating fireplace or gas stove, automobile use were significant predictors for benzene personal exposure.
