Does Attempt at Hearing Preservation Microsurgery of Vestibular Schwannoma Affect Postoperative Tinnitus?
Original language description
New techniques and instruments improved the chance for hearing preservation in vestibular schwannoma surgery. Our data show that hearing preservation doesn’t necessarily mean an improvement in quality of life especially in case of postoperative tinnitus occurrence. The main disadvantage of hearing preservation procedure is occurrence of cases with anatomically preserved cochlear nerve but with deafness and bothersome tinnitus. Results of current study stress the importance of proper pre- and intraoperative decision making about attempt at hearing preservation versus potential for tinnitus elimination/risk of new onset of tinnitus.
