Original language description
Tissue engineering is an innovative approach to restoring damaged or missing tissues. Using autologous cells in combination with biocompatible materials, it overcomes limitations of the commonly used standard treatment techniques, based mainly on implantation of a donor tissue. In the recent years tissue engineering has underwent a great development in the field of suitable materials and production technologies. Moreover, different stimuli (such as growth factors, bioactive molecules or gene engineering) are being tested to enhance the cellular production of characteristic proteins and newly formed tissues.
