Natural compound Ganoderma lucidum influences survival and migration of colorectal and pancreatic cell lines
Original language description
Metastases are considered to be a major complication in patients with many types of cancers. Metastatic, or stage IV colon cancer patients, have a 5-year relative survival rate around 11% and pancreatic cancer patients less than 5%. The most common sites of metastases of colorectal and pancreatic cancer are liver, lungs and peritoneum. Identification of compounds with anti-metastatic effect may affect the disease progression, delay the spread of the disease and in addition elongate the relative survival of cancer patients. Ganoderma lucidum (GLC) is a medical mushroom, used in traditional Chinese medicine with declared anticancer effect in vitro. Our study was aimed to investigate anti-proliferative and anti-migration effects of natural compound Ganoderma lucidum on colorectal and pancreatic cancer cell lines.nWe have studied survival and migration of colorectal cancer (HCT116, HT29) and pancreatic cell lines (MiaPaca2, Panc1) after GLC treatment. Our results showed that 0.5µg/µl GLC decreased the survival of HCT116 by 25% (p<0.05). Moreover we observed this effect also in HT29 cell line (15%; p<0.05). In case of pancreatic cancer cells, GLC treatment decreased survival of Miapaca2 cells by about 36,5% (p<0.01) and Panc1 cells by around 48% (p<0.05). Finally, GLC extract decreased migration of CRC and pancreatic cell lines (HCT116, 64.32%, p<0.05 and HT29 52%, p<0.05).nOur results suggest that GLC extract significantly decreases cell survival and migration. This finding may lead to delay of the disease progression and natural compounds seem to be a potential supplement to classical cancer therapy.n
