A complex of Kif18b and MCAK promotes microtubule depolymerization and is negatively regulated by aurora kinases
Original language description
Using siRNA-based screens we have identified a novel kinesin-8 motor Kif18b, which acts together with MCAK to promote microtubule depolymerization during mitosis. Kif18b/MCAK complex controls the length of microtubules and contributes to the bipolar organization of a mitotic spindle. Role of Kif18b/MCAK complex is tightly regulated by the activity of aurora kinases that directly phosphorylate both Kif18b and MCAK which leads to the disassembly of the Kif18b/MCAK complex and enables fine tuning of its MTdepolymerizing activity.
