Chicken – an old and versatile experimental model
Original language description
The chicken is not only a livestock species and most important source of nutritional proteins worldwide, but also a valuable model for research in the field of immunology, virology, and developmental biology. Although it was the first domestic animal to have its genome sequenced, chicken lagged behind other laboratory models and particularly mouse because of the lack of reverse genetics and technologies of functional genomics. With the recent onset of efficient transgenesis, genetic knock-out, and genome editing in chicken, it is the right time to commemorate traditional advantages and contributions of the chicken as a laboratory animal. Herein we review the major achievements of the chicken research with a special respect to the unique collection of inbred lines maintained at the Institute of Molecular Genetics in Prague.
