Origins of vascular and hematopoietic system.
Original language description
In all vertebrates examined to date, the primitive vascular network arises from endothelial precursors called angioblasts. Equipotent angioblasts undergo successive steps of differentiation that, along with cues from local microenvironments, give rise to specialized subsets of endothelial cells (ECs), such as arterial, venous, endocardial or blood brain barrier ECs. Another specialized subset of arterial ECs includes hemogenic endothelium. These cells arise from ventral aortic endothelium and they give rise to hematopoietic stem cells that are further responsible for formation of the whole blood forming system. This suggests that endothelial and hematopoietic development is tightly connected. Understanding the molecular mechanisms responsible for the specification of these cell types is crucial to treat vascular and blood diseases.
