Jesuit school plays from provincia bohemia SJ written for grammar classes

  • Original language description

In 17th and 18th century, the Jesuit theatre played an important role in the Czech lands, providing the first theatre experience to thousands of students. Sources available from the Czech lands offer a unique material – more than 200 complete texts of plays. Plays of this type, the “one-off” productions, were rarely published by print and as far as we know, have not survived abroad from a few exceptions. So this type of literary production is rarely considered in specialized publications. As far as the subject matteris concerned, two types of plays are evenly represented in the repertory of the Prague Jesuit gymnasia throughout the entire first half of the 18th century. One group of plays draws on the mediaeval heritage and continues to dramatize – in different guises – a struggle over the human soul. The other is the Jesuit drama on profane subjects, with a focus on familial relationships (frequently combined with power struggle and court intrigue) and friendship. A sort of synthesis of all mentioned attributes – psychomachia, court environment, jealous siblings, intrigues and realistic scenes from school life – is achieved in a large group of plays about saints, martyrs and converts.
