The German-Language Critical Reception of Čapek’s W.U.R
Original language description
The study examines German and Austrian productions of Čapek’s RUR and their critical reception. Just two years after its first publication, the play was translated into German by Otto Pick as W.U.R. - Werstands Universal Robots (1922). Its German premiere in on 6 October 1921 in the Stadttheater Aachen was followed by two productions in 1923 - in the Theater am Kurfürstendamm in Berlin (directed by John Gottowt) and in Vienna’s Neue Wiener Bühne. I will also explore reflections in the German speaking world on thematic and figural similarities between Čapek’s RUR and Georg Kaiser’s pivotal German expressionist plays Gas I (1918) and Gas II (1920).
