Original language description
The contribution brings examples of Czech traditional songs and dances collected in the late 19th century and claims dance descriptions can only be meaningful if they are combined with the collectors´own narratives. The aim of the article is to highlightsome issues that could help to perceive traditional dance culture as an historical source including records and descriptions in collections. Employing different types of evidence about traditional music and dance culture dating to the time of the firstcollections of rural songs and dances might encourage thinking about the dancescape in a historical perspective.
