Involuntary Hero: Otakar Ostrčil and his Biographer Zdeněk Nejedlý
Original language description
Paper read at the conference Musical Biography. National Ideology, Narrative Technique, and the Nature of Myth, London 2015 : Nejedlý was the main promoter of Ostrčil from the beginning of his career in the first decade of the 20th century, but his biography and numerous other texts about Ostrčil present considerably biased portrait of the composer. Ostrčil earned an important place in Nejedlý?s interpretation of the development of Czech music based on the division of music into a progressive and a conservative stream, represented by Bedřich Smetana and Antonín Dvořák, respectively, and by their followers. Later Nejedlý´s texts pointed out connections between Ostrčil´s work and communist or socialist worldview. The relation of these two personalities presents a striking case of a biographer using his subject as a vehicle for his own ideas
